SAN ANGELO, Texas – Utilizing small ball and a strong relief appearance from
Ryan Free, the No. 4 Angelo State baseball team down Texas A&M International by a final score of 4-2 on a windy Sunday afternoon at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Rams secure the series sweep and improve to a 24-6 (22-6) record while TAMIU drop to 11-23 (10-22).
The Dustdevils struck first in the top of the second inning when two singles and an error set up an RBI ground out and another single to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Rams responded with a run in the bottom of the third as
Jacob Guerrero drew a walk and later advanced to third for a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Weston Valasek to cut the deficit down to one run.
Ryan Free came on in relief in the top of the fourth and dealt. The left-hander from Frisco, Texas set down 15 batters in a row which includes striking out the side in the top of the seventh. His day ended in the top of the ninth after delivering 5.2 innings where he did not allow a run and struck out seven batters to earn his first win on the season.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Chase Pendley hit a one out single through the left side before a throwing error on a pick off attempt scored him from first to tie the game. Then in the ensuing inning,
Austin Beck led off with a single up the middle before another error on a pick off attempt put him in scoring position for
Blake Wilhoite when bunted aboard before he forced a throwing error that scored Beck and gave the Rams its first lead of the ballgame.
The Rams scratched an insurance run across in the bottom of the eighth when
Weston Valasek walked to lead off the inning. After he stole second base and a throwing error moved him to third,
Austin Beck laid down a bunt single to score the runner and bring the game to its final score after
Keene Kreusler came on in relief and collected a strikeout to secure the series sweep.
The Rams will now hit the road and travel to Kingsville to take on the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville in a four game series beginning on Friday, Mar. 28.
