No. 7 Rambelles Score 22 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Greyhounds

Portales, N.M. – The Angelo State softball team kicked off its final road trip of the regular season with a big offensive showing against Eastern New Mexico, winning game one 10-3 before finishing the sweep with a 12-9 win in game two on Wednesday at Greyhound Softball Field.

Walks by Erin Plunkett and Tatiana Trotter sandwiched Laylonna Applin reaching base on a hit by pitch to load the bases in the top of the first inning in game one, with a pair of runs scoring on sacrifice flies by Ashton McMillan and Lauren De La Cruz.

The Greyhounds would halve the deficit in the bottom half of the inning, and the score remained 2-1 until the third inning, when Averie Gunther's single up the middle scored Trotter to make it 3-1.

The Greyhounds would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run.

The Rambelles would score the final seven runs in game one to pull away with the win.

Carter Smith kicked off the fourth inning with a double, scoring the go-ahead run by stealing home with two outs.

Walks by Gunther and De Baca in the fifth inning set up Smith, whose two-out single drove in a run, pushing the scoreline to 5-1.

The final five runs scored would all come with two outs in the top of the sixth, started by a McMillan inside-the-park home run down the left field line.

Back-to-back doubles by Gunther and De La Cruz would score another run, and Smith would deliver a two-RBI single to make it 10-3, the game's final scoreline.

Cheyenne Floyd earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing three hits and three runs while striking out nine. Matie Wolkow threw the final inning in relief, only allowing one hit.

The hosts scored first in game two with a grand slam in the first inning and would hold the four-run lead until the fourth inning.

The Rambelles would score eight times in the fourth inning on six hits in 13 plate appearances.

A fielder's choice scored the first run, and the subsequent seven runs would all come with two outs.

With the bases loaded, Smith singled up the middle to score a pair of runs; Abby Brand followed with an RBI double to tie the game.

With the bases loaded, Applin cleared them in her second at-bat of the inning, doubling to left center field to make it 8-4.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the hosts fought back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.

The Rambelles would retake the lead in the sixth inning with a two-out infield single by McMillan and added to the lead in the seventh with three runs, coming on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a pair of passed balls.

The Greyhounds clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't mount a comeback.

Amelia Hatthorn started game two in the circle, throwing the first four innings before making way for Raegan Sucher, who picked up her second win this season. Sucher threw 1.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits. Floyd recorded the final four outs, recording a pair of strikeouts to earn her second save in 2025.

The Rambelles improve to 39-9 on the season and 30-8 in LSC play. They finish off their road schedule on Friday against Western New Mexico.
