Football Falls to No. 12 Central Washington in Home Battle

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University football battled No. 14 Central Washington throughout Saturday's Lone Star Conference matchup at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, but a 21-point second quarter by the Wildcats proved to be the difference as the Rams fell 41-14.

With the loss, Angelo State falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while Central Washington improves to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

The Rams finished the night with 420 yards of total offense, including 264 yards on the ground, and recorded 22 first downs compared to 19 by the Wildcats. However, four ASU turnovers, including two interceptions and two lost fumbles, helped Central Washington capitalize on its opportunities.

Central Washington opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead into the second.

The Wildcats then erupted for three touchdowns in less than six minutes to build a 27-0 advantage. The CWU quarterback connected on a 29-yard score before breaking loose for a 76-yard touchdown run on the following drive. A third strike went for a 30-yards going into the half.

The Rams answered before halftime with their first touchdown of the night. Ashton Dickens broke through for a 59-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds remaining in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 27-7 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Central Washington extended its lead early in the fourth when with an 8-yard touchdown run.

Angelo State responded with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive of its own. Ayden Arp finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, bringing the Rams within 20 points at 34-14 with 8:50 remaining.

The Wildcats answered with a touchdown of their own less than four minutes later, and ASU was unable to close the gap further.

Dickens led the Rams on the ground with 102 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Cameron Dischler added 72 yards on 11 carries. Arp rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown while completing 15 of 26 passes for 156 yards.

Alan Dobbins led the Rams through the air with six receptions for 49 yards. Preston Baker added two catches for 44 yards, including a team-long 44-yard reception, while Donny Bishop hauled in four passes for 37 yards.

Defensively, Owen Henderson led Angelo State with six tackles. Dabrein Moss, Devonte Robertson, Iverson Moore and Hunter Boudreaux each recorded four tackles.

The Rams will look to bounce back on Homecoming night, when they host Sul Ross State next Saturday, Oct. 10, when they return to LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
