ALPINE, Texas – The No. 9 Angelo State baseball team competed in its first doubleheader of the 2026 campaign, picking up the sweep of Sul Ross State 18-11 and 4-2 on Valentine's Day at Kokernot Field.
With the wins, the Rams improve to a 6-3 record overall and in Lone Star Conference play.
GAME ONE: Angelo State 18, Sul Ross State 11
Angelo State outlasted Sul Ross State in a high-scoring opener, using a late offensive surge to secure the victory.
Blake Wilhoite opened the game with a single and scored on
Austin Beck's double to give the Rams an early lead. Angelo State added another run on a Lobos error later in the inning.
Sul Ross answered with four runs in the bottom of the first against starter
Isaac Godard, who worked two innings and allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three.
The Rams tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Brett Smajstrla scored on an error in the third, and
Tate Greene crossed the plate in the fourth following another defensive miscue.
Angelo State regained the lead in the fifth when
Garrett Wallace drove in Beck and Smajstrla with a single.
The Rams put the game away by scoring 12 runs over the final three innings, capitalizing on seven Sul Ross errors.
Payton Bush highlighted the stretch with an RBI triple.
Sul Ross scored late to cut into the deficit, but Angelo State closed out the win with a strikeout.
GAME TWO: Angelo State 4, Sul Ross State 2
Offense proved to be more scarce in game two, but it did not stop the Rams from scoring first as
Austin Beck hit a one-out single in the game's opening frame and would score a couple of batters later on
Garrett Wallace's RBI single.
Sul Ross tied the game in the bottom of the first before the Rams regained control in the third. Chris Bernal led off with a double and scored on Wilhoite's RBI single. Wilhoite later came home on Wallace's RBI double to make it 3-1.
Ryan Cook got the call to start game three of the series and the redshirt-freshman continued his momentum generated from his previous appearance against UT Tyler. The Evergreen, Colorado native went the distance, tossing seven innings, giving up two runs off three hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters to earn the victory.
Angelo State added an insurance run in the sixth when Smajstrla reached on a single and scored during a double-steal attempt with
Chase Pendley.
The Rams will go for the series sweep of the Lobos on Sunday, Feb. 15, with the first pitch from Kokernot Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
