SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 18 Angelo State University baseball team scored seven unanswered runs Friday night to defeat No. 23 St. Mary's 7-3 in the opener of a Top 25 Lone Star Conference series at Dickson Stadium.
The win marked the Rams' second come-from-behind victory of the season and improved their record to 11-4 overall and in conference play.
Angelo State put runners on base in each of the first four innings but did not score. St. Mary's took advanatage of this to break through in the fifth, stringing together singles to plate three runs against Rams' starter Josh Reed. The redshirt sophomore lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three. He did not factor into the decision, ending his streak of four consecutive wins in Friday starts.
Austin Beck cut into the deficit with a leadoff home run in the sixth before the Rams tied the game in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Beck and Brett Smajstrla each drew a walk to force in runs.
Angelo State took control in the eighth. Garrett Wallace delivered a two-run double down the right-field line, and Jordan Kelly later forced a rundown that allowed Connor DiGesualdo to score from third. Chase Pendley added an RBI triple in the ninth to extend the lead.
Garrett Baumann closed the game with three scoreless innings, allowing two walks and striking out six to earn his fourth win of the season.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at Dickson Stadium. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m.
