SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 18 Angelo State University baseball team scored four runs over the final two innings to defeat No. 23 St. Mary's 5-2 in 10 innings Sunday at Dickson Stadium, completing a four-game series sweep.
With its first win in extra innings of the season, the Rams improved to 14-4 overall and moved into a tie atop the Lone Star Conference standings.
Angelo State opened the scoring in the second inning when
Brett Smajstrla singled through the left side to drive in
Payton Bush.
The Rattlers answered with an RBI single in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI double to right-center field.
Chance Douglas started for the Rams and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two.
Garrett Villa pitched the last 1/3 of the fifth inning and forced a lineout.
Angelo State tied the game in the ninth.
Austin Beck and
Chase Pendley opened the inning with consecutive singles, and Bush followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought Beck home from third.
Garrett Baumann entered in the sixth and kept the Rattlers off the board the rest of the way. The senior right-hander worked five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out one to earn his fifth win of the season.
In the 10th,
Blake Wilhoite and Beck recorded back-to-back singles with two outs. Pendley followed with an RBI single through the right side to give the Rams the lead. After a pitching change, Bush and Smajstrla added RBI singles to extend the advantage to 5-2. Baumann closed out the bottom half to seal the sweep.
Angelo State returns home to Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium on Friday, March 6, to open a two-week homestand against Lubbock Christian University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
