LAREDO, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team erased a two-run deficit Friday to defeat Texas A&M International 3-2 in the opener of a four-game series at Jorge Haynes Field.
With the win, the Rams improved to 18-9 overall and 11-1 on the road.
Josh Reed started and worked into the third inning before running into trouble. TAMIU loaded the bases and scored its first run on a walk, then added another on a sacrifice fly.
Garrett Baumann entered in relief and limited the damage, keeping the Rams within striking distance.
Baumann carried the Rams through the fifth before
Isaac Godard pitched a scoreless sixth inning, striking out one to earn his second win of the season.
Angelo State broke through in the sixth.
Blake Wilhoite led off with a single and advanced to third before
Brett Smajstrla beat out an infield single to drive in the Rams' first run.
The Rams took the lead in the seventh.
Payton Bush,
Tate Greene and
Cooper Knight each drew walks to load the bases, and
Christian Garnette delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to tie the game. After
Jordan Kelly was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Wilhoite followed with an infield single to give ASU a 3-2 lead.
The Dustdevils threatened in the bottom of the inning, but
Luke Spencer escaped the jam. Spencer pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to earn his first save of the season.
The Rams and Dustdevils will continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
