Rams Sweep Doubleheader Against Texas A&M-Kingsville

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team responded with a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M–Kingsville on Saturday, winning 9-2 and 10-2 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the victories, the Rams improved to 22-11 overall and evened their home record at 9-9.

Game 1: Angelo State 9, Texas A&M-Kingsville 2
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before ASU broke through in the third. Hunter Holt led off with a walk and later scored on an RBI single by Blake Wilhoite. Brett Smajstrla followed with a two-run home run to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.

After Texas A&M-Kingsville scored in the fourth, Angelo State responded with four runs in the bottom half. Wilhoite delivered an RBI triple, while Gamaliel Jones and Smajstrla added RBI doubles. Payton Bush capped the inning with an RBI single.

The Javelinas added a run in the sixth, but the Rams answered again. Chase Pendley hit an RBI double, and Smajstrla followed with an RBI triple to extend the lead to 9-2.

Clayton Broeder opened the game with a scoreless inning in his first appearance of the season. Isaac Godard earned the win, pitching the final six innings and allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out five.

Game 2: Angelo State 10, Texas A&M-Kingsville 2
Angelo State carried its momentum into the second game, opening the scoring in the second inning. Austin Beck hit an RBI double and later scored on a throwing error after stealing third.

TAMUK answered with two runs, but the Rams broke the game open in the third with an eight-run inning. Angelo State combined four hits, two hit batters and a walk in the frame, highlighted by an RBI double from Pendley.

Nick Gray earned the win, pitching into the seventh inning. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Jalen Rogers closed the game, and the Rams held the Javelinas scoreless over the final fourinnings.

Angelo State finished the day 19-for-52 at the plate and hit .500 with runners in scoring position.

The Rams will look to secure the series on Sunday, Mar. 29 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
