No. 13 Rams Fall to Lubbock Christian in Series Finale

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 13 Angelo State University baseball team surrendered four home runs Sunday and fell to Lubbock Christian 11-8 in the series finale at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the loss, the Rams split the four-game series and moved to 16-6 overall and in Lone Star Conference play.

Angelo State opened the scoring in the second inning when Chris Bernal, making his first career start in left field, singled through the left side to drive in two runs.

Lubbock Christian answered with a two-run home run to tie the game, but the Rams regained the lead when Chase Pendley lifted a sacrifice fly.

The Chaparrals then scored four consecutive runs across the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by another two-run home run in the fourth.

Angelo State rallied in the fifth to tie the game. Pendley delivered an RBI single to center field, Blake Wilhoite brought in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Austin Beck doubled to left-center to make it 7-7.

Lubbock Christian reclaimed the lead in the eighth on its third two-run home run of the game. The Rams answered with a run when Wilhoite stole third and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Chaparrals added insurance in the ninth with their fourth home run, a two-run shot to left field, and held Angelo State scoreless in the bottom half to secure the win.

Garrett Baumann entered in relief in the fifth inning and allowed the last five runs, all earned, off eight hits while collecting six strikeouts. The senior threw over 100 pitches in the losing effort.

The Rams return to action Friday when they host UT Dallas for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
