AUSTIN, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball program outlasted St. Edward's, 3-2, in a 10-inning thriller on Easter Sunday at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
With the win, the Rams secured a series split against the Hilltoppers while improving to a 25-13 overall record and 15-4 on the road.
Angelo State opened the scoring in the third inning when
Tate Greene drove in
Chase Pendley with an RBI groundout after Pendley led off the frame with a double.
St. Edward's answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to even the score.
The Rams regained the lead in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Greene delivered again with his second RBI groundout of the game to make it 2-1.
Luke Spencer turned in a standout performance on the mound, delivering the longest start by a Rams pitcher this season. The senior right hander went 8 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The Hilltoppers forced extra innings in the ninth. With runners on first and third, St. Edward's executed a double steal. The Rams recorded the out at second but could not prevent the run from scoring at home.
The Blue and Gold responded in the 10th. Greene reached third on an infield single and an errant pickoff attempt before
Austin Beck laid down a bunt back to the pitcher, bringing home the go-ahead run.
Garrett Baumann closed the door, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings while allowing one hit and striking out three to earn the win.
The Rams will now return home where they will host West Texas A&M beginning on Friday, April 10 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
