No. 12 Rams Fall to No. 5 UT Tyler in LSC Championship

TYLER, Texas – The second-seeded, No. 12 Angelo State baseball team fell to top-seeded, No. 5 UT Tyler 6-4 in the Lone Star Conference Championship game Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field.

With the loss, the Rams move to 40-17 overall and now await the NCAA Division II Baseball Selection Show with a resume that includes a 21-6 record away from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

Following the game, Garrett Baumann, Tate Greene and Hunter Holt were named to the LSC All-Tournament Team.

UT Tyler opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double against Angelo State starter Josh Reed. The redshirt sophomore left-hander worked four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one.

The Rams answered in the second inning with three runs to take the lead. Austin Beck started the scoring with an RBI bunt single before Christian Garnette added a sacrifice bunt to bring home another run. Later in the inning, Chris Bernal lined an RBI double into left-center field to give ASU a 3-1 advantage.

The Patriots responded with a four-run third inning, capitalizing on Rams defensive miscues along with timely hitting to regain the lead. UT Tyler added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 6-3.

Angelo State's bullpen kept the Rams within striking distance the rest of the way. Garrett Villa and Jude Stephens combined to throw five scoreless innings in relief, allowing just three hits and one walk.

The Rams attempted a late rally when Garnette singled up the middle to cut the deficit to two runs, but Angelo State was unable to complete the comeback.

The Rams will now await the NCAA Division II Baseball Selection Show, which is scheduled to air Sunday, May 10, at 9 p.m. on ncaa.com.
