Assistant Coach Travis Lawler is entering his sixth year with the Angelo State Rams after a playing career that saw him drafted twice and pitch at the Division I level. He is in his fourth year with the program after working two years as a student assistant.
The College Station native graduated from A&M-Consolidated High School before deciding to play college baseball for the Gators at the University of Florida over playing professionally for the Colorado Rockies who selected him in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He would appear in 11 games and record 24 strikeouts in his freshman season. Lawler would transfer to pitch at Midland College after one year in Gainesville, Fla.
Lawler was then selected in the MLB draft for the second time – this time deciding to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009. He played for the Johnson City Cardinals and Batavia Muckdogs.
His father, Jim, was an assistant coach at Texas A&M for 21 years and also was the head coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
