SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Behind two double-doubles from sophomore
Alex Woolsey and freshman
Kaelen Valdez, the Angelo State volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight games Friday evening when it defeated St. Mary's, 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14) in non-conference action.
Woolsey and Valdez each tallied their team-leading eighth double-doubles of the season. Woolsey, a setter out of Plano, notched 47 assists and 12 digs along with five kills to hit .417. Valdez recorded 11 kills and 14 digs, with a pair of assists, a solo block and one service ace. Junior
Kayla Smith registered a season-high 15 digs in the contest and contributed four kills, three total blocks, two assists and a service ace. Also recording career-highs in the match were
Katie Coleman, who tied her season-best 12 kills,
Caroline Cleveland, who had a career-high four assists and a match-high 16 digs, and
Emily Booth, who hit a career-high .714 after tallying five kills. Other top performers for the 'Belles (15-10) include
Chelsea Gibson, who slammed 14 kills, five digs and two total blocks while hitting .400, and
Shelby Warick who dug 10 balls on defense.
The 'Belles got off to a rough start in the first set, as St. Mary's (12-15) took an early 8-3 lead forcing an ASU timeout. The break in action sparked a kill by freshman
Maddie Huth, but the Rattlers got the ball back on a Mallory Moeller kill and took a seven-point advantage (14-7). The Rambelles pulled within three (14-11), but could not get any closer as St. Mary's rattled off four more points to take a seven point lead. The Rattlers went on to take the first set, 25-17.
After dropping the first set, the 'Belles stepped onto the court determined to win after the setback. They did just that as the Rambelles knocked down 17 kills in the set and held the Rattlers to a .091 hitting percentage. Despite being a close match early on, the 'Belles broke a 14-14 tie on a Coleman kill and never looked back. After the kill, the Rattlers called a pair of timeouts but were unable to recover as Angelo State tied the match 1-1, winning the second set by a score of 25-19.
St. Mary's jumped out in front, beginning the third set on a 6-1 run. However, Angelo State would not go quietly as the 'Belles chipped away at the Rattlers' lead and eventually went ahead on another kill by Coleman. With the match in their favor, the Rambelles pushed the score to 20-10 on a Gibson kill. The Rattlers tried to rally, but the lead was too much to overcome and the 'Belles claimed the third set, 25-17.
The fourth set began much like the third with the Rattlers taking a 6-1 lead. As if repeating the third set all over, the 'Belles rallied back and evened the score at nine apiece on a Gibson kill forcing St. Mary's to call a break in the action. Following the timeout, the two squads fought tooth-and-nail for the lead, but the 'Belles would come out on top after going on a 5-0 run (17-11). The run gave the Rambelles the momentum they needed to win the set and the match as they posted eight points, while only allowing the Rattlers to score three, to win the set, 25-14.
St. Mary's was led by Kori McCarver, who posted a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs in the setback. Leading the Rattlers' defense was Stephanie Flores with 15 digs, while Allie Murray contributed 10. McCarver tallied nine kills, just one shy of recording a triple-double.
The 'Belles will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 30, when they go head-to-head with Texas A&M-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference action. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas.
