COMMERCE, Texas –
Freshman Julie Kennedy hit .467 and tallied eight kills to help Angelo State defeat Texas A&M-Commerce, 3-0, (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) Thursday night. The 'Belles limited the Lions to a .082 hitting percentage, while ASU notched 36 kills and four total team blocks.

Junior Kayla Smith came off the bench for the Rambelles (5-6, 2-1 LSC) and contributed four kills and five digs to help Angelo State complete the sweep. Setter Alex Woolsey registered 31 assists, three digs and a trio of block assists, while sophomores Alisa Meredith and Chelsea Gibson led the offensive attack with seven and eight kills, respectively. Meredith hit .385 in the contest with four digs, and Gibson recorded three block assists and hit .263.

The Angelo State defense was solid as it never allowed Texas A&M-Commerce (4-7, 0-3 LSC) to hit over .100 in the contest.

“We played a good game defensively,” head coach Chuck Waddington said. “Kayla Smith stepped in off the bench and filled a hole for us. We were able to keep them guessing. Julie Kennedy was effective on the right side; she was able to keep them off balance. It was a good team win.”

The first set was close, as the two teams battled and traded points until back-to-back service aces by Katie Coleman gave the 'Belles a three-point lead (18-15). Coleman's aces seemed to be the game-changing play as the 'Belles went on a 5-0 run. The Lions clawed their way back into the match knotting the game at 21, but a kill by Meredith would give the Rambelles the lead for good. ASU took game one by three (25-22).

Angelo State came back in the second set right where it left off. The 'Belles took a 12-5 lead and forced a Texas A&M-Commerce timeout in the beginning of the second set. The timeout did not kill the Rambelles' momentum as they took a 10-point lead (21-11) taking advantage of back-to-back Lions' errors. ASU continued to knock down points cruising to a 25-16 win in the second set.

Texas A&M-Commerce put up a good fight in the third game. The Lions took an early 3-0 lead, but could not maintain it. With the score even at three, the two conference foes traded points in a game that was tied eight times. Gibson broke the final tie spiking a ball over the net to put the 'Belles up 18-17. Following a service ace by Shelby Warick, the Rambelles knocked down five consecutive kills to put the third and final set in the books, 25-18.

Rachel Robertson led the Lions' offense with 10 kills, while Dakota Crockett notched 10 digs and Jordan Neal recorded 22 assists.

The Rambelles will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m., in Denton, Texas, when they take on Lone Star Conference rival Texas Woman's University. Live stats and live video will be available at AngeloSports.com.
