Final Stats (.pdf)

Emporia, Kan. – Goalkeeper Melanie Peterson logged 110 minutes of shutout soccer to lead the Angelo State soccer squad to a 0-0 tie against Emporia State Friday night at ECU Pitch in Emporia, Kan. ASU improved to 9-6-1 all-time in season openers.

The Rambelle's outshot the Hornets, 17-7, in the contest with Brandie DeBacker getting five shots on frame. Despite the looks, Emporia State's (0-0-1) goalkeeper Natalie Hoernig registered 10 saves on the night to keep the Belle's off the scoreboard. Angelo State head coach Travis McCorkle was excited with his team and the improvement of his young players.

“We got to play a lot of young players and they played well for us,” said McCorkle. “At one point we had three freshman defenders in at one time and they got a shutout.”

Peterson had a solid outing for Angelo State (0-0-1) between the pipes. The senior recorded her 10th career shutout against the Hornets which featured three saves. One of the saves was a hard-kicked ball from 25 yards out that the Fort Worth, Texas product handled cleanly.

“Her performance (Friday) should really boost her confidence after coming off surgery in the summer,” said McCorkle. “She played well and made the saves she needed to. Her performance really will give our team the confidence they need.”

After a day of rest, the Rambelles will return to the pitch for Sunday's matinee match-up against Missouri Western State (0-1-0) at noon to close the Emporia Invitational.
