The Game
Saturday's game is a matchup between Angelo State and Incarnate Word. Both teams are coming off Lone Star Conference losses a week ago, and are looking to get back on track. The Rams are currently 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the LSC after dropping a triple-overtime affair with Texas A&M-Kingsville, 36-33. The Cardinals are sitting at 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the LSC. UIW lost to Tarleton State seven days ago, 48-10.
The Series
This is just the second meeting between the squads and the first in San Antonio at Benson Stadium. Angelo State had a convincing win last year on homecoming in San Angelo, 61-17. Former Rams' quarterback
Josh Neiswander threw for 385 yards en route to ASU's second-highest point total in school history.
The Coaches
Angelo State:
Will Wagner (Hardin-Simmons, '96) continues his first year as head coach of the Rams after serving at Northwest Missouri State for 12 years. The Odessa native helped the Bearcats win three national championships as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.
Incarnate Word: Todd Ivicic (Sam Houston '93) arrived at Incarnate Word in November 2007 as the defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator. He was named interim head coach in late October, and will guide the Cardinals for the remaining three games of the 2011 schedule
The Program
Angelo State won the NAIA National Championship in 1978 and has won three Lone Star Conference Championships (1978, 1984, 1987). The Rams have seen five NCAA D-II playoff appearances and produced 57 All-Americans. Angelo State has sent 11 student-athletes on to successful NFL careers, including
Pierce Holt, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989, was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff coached at ASU, and has been inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Holt and former Rams' tackle Rodney Cason.
This Week's Opponent
The University of Incarnate Word is located in San Antonio, Texas, and has an enrollment of 7,100. The Cardinals are in their second year of full membership in the Lone Star Conference and finished the 2010 season 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the LSC South.
Dynamic Duo
Defensive linemen
Lawrence Rumph and
Shiloh Hickman have made an impact on the Rams' front four. On the year, Rumph ranks 14th in the nation with 7.5 sacks. In Lone Star Conferene games, the senior Texas Tech transfer ranks fifth in tackles for loss with 1.33 per game. Alongside Rumph in tackles for loss is Hickman. The junior defensive end is averaging 1.40 per game and ranks fourth in the LSC. The duo also has a knack at getting to LSC quarterbacks. Hickman ranks second in confernce play with 4.5 sacks, while Rumph ranks fifth with 4.0.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
There's a night and day difference in the Angelo State football team. The Rams are 4-0 during day games, outscoring their opponents 149 to 68 and racking up 395.5 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, under the lights, ASU has dropped to 0-5. The Rams have been outscored 177 to 98 and surrendered 456.0 yards of total offense to its opposition.
Tha Carter VII
Angelo State ranks third in the LSC in rushing offense, chalking up 136.2 yards per game. This is in large part to Rams' running back
Tristan Carter. The Tucker, Ga., native ranks sixth in the LSC in rushing yards per game with 70.7. The senior has turned out three 100-yard performances on the season, and he now has five for his career. Don't be fooled though, as Carter is a dual threat for the Rams' offensive attack. He is second on the team in receptions, hauling in 24 on the year. The senior has punched the ball into the end zone eight times this year (7 rushing, 1 receiving).
Stick With Me
Alvin Johnson has earned the nickname “Stick” for being one of the Rams best defensive backs. The junior captain continues to pace the secondary, as he has six pass breakups and a team-high 61 tackles. Last week against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Javelinas were threating, but Johnson picked the ball off in the end zone to erase the threat.
Knight Time
Wide out
Joey Knight has a knack for finding the end zone. The sophomore leads the team in touchdown receptions and has scored in five of the last seven games. On the season, Knight has caught 20 balls for 369 yards. He is second on the team in yards-per-catch with 18.5.
Tip of the Cap, Friend
ASU head coach
Will Wagner and assistant head coach
Theron Aych will wear red visors to honor Scott Bostwick this season after their friend and colleague suffered a heart attack and passed away in June. Wagner coached with Bostwick who was the defensive coordinator at Northwest Missouri State for 17 years before being named the Bearcats' head coach in January.
“Coach Bostwick was like a brother to me,” Wagner said. “We coached together for 13 years and I learned a lot about defensive football from him. He had the biggest heart; he would drop everything he was doing to help you out. He was a great coach, mentor and friend who never lived out his dream of leading the Bearcats out onto the field as their head coach, and that's a shame. Bostwick was famous in the MIAA and around D-II football for wearing a red hat on the sidelines so the defensive players could spot him easily. I am grateful for all he did for me and I wear this red hat to honor him.”
