Belles Host Midwestern to Close Out Regular Season

Three Belle seniors to be honored

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 16 Angelo State volleyball team plays its final match of the regular season at 2 p.m. home versus Midwestern State on Saturday.

It will be the final home match for Belles seniors Celeste Bonter, Debbie Ohl and Kayla Smith as they will honored for their great contributions to the program.

“We'll treat them right and throw some love at them,” head coach Chuck Waddington said. “It's always an emotional day, Senior Day, for kids that's been here all four years like Kayla and for the coaching staff as well.”

The Belles (27-4, 16-3 Lone Star Conference) won their match Thursday against Cameron, 3-0, earning their 12th win at home on the year and extending their school-record conference win mark to 16. Bonter had 16 kills for the match versus the Aggies, including nine in the third and deciding set, rallying the Belles from a 20-15 deficit.

Angelo State and Midwestern State will meet for the 31st time this Saturday with the Belles holding a 21-9 advantage over the Mustangs. Angelo State has won three straight against Midwestern State the latest being a 3-1 win in Wichita Falls on Oct. 8 earlier in the year.

Midwestern State (15-14, 7-12 LSC) lost, 3-0, to Abilene Christian on Thursday. The Mustangs are led offensively by junior outside hitter Shelbi Stewart who has 260 kills on the season.

Senior Spotlight
#5 Celeste Bonter, OH – The transfer from Canada has made a huge impact for the Belles this year leading the team in total kills with 311 and earning LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this season.

“Celeste is a big gun on the left side for us,” Waddington said. “She takes a lot of swings and takes a lot of offensive weight for us.”

#18 Debbie Ohl, RS – A junior transfer from Kansas, Ohl has made the smooth transition from middle blocker to right side, ranking third on the team in kills with 263 and has eight double-doubles on the year.

“Debbie is same for us on the right side like Celeste,” Waddington said. “She usually tries to block the other team's best attacker and try to score over that person as well.”

#11 Kayla Smith, OH/DS – Smith, the only four-year senior on the squad, has appeared 118 matches in her career for the Belles playing a number of different positions. This season, Smith has 369 digs for the Belles and is 10 away from having 1,000 in her career.

“Kayla, she's our rock,” Waddington said. “She's the person to go to when you need something done in the match and off the court as well.”
