SAN ANGELO
Mary Kate McKay and Claire Molina each threw complete games for Angelo State to lead the eighth-ranked Rambelles to a pair of wins in the ASU Blue and Gold Classic at the ASU Softball Complex Saturday. McKay improved to 4-0 on the season, while Molina tallied season-high nine strikeouts in her outing.

Angelo State (7-0) opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory against Texas-Permian Basin (3-4). The 'Belles plated two first-inning runs against the Falcons, with the second run coming after DeeshanaLynn Tafiti laced a double through the left-center alleyway plating Kacie Easley.

Texas-Permian Basin made it a 2-1 game in the second inning, after Erica Rangel scored an unearned run on an ASU throwing error. This would be as close as the Falcons would climb, as ASU tacked on one run in the fourth and another in the fifth to secure a 4-2 win.

McKay put in a full day of work in the circle, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, striking out four while allowing just one earned run.

In game two of the ASU Blue and Gold Classic, the 'Belles scored nine runs on 12 hits to defeat Washburn, 9-0. Same song, different verse for the Angelo State softball team, as the 'Belles scored another first-inning run. It began with a Chelsey Walters' walk who scored after Kaycee Taylor hammered a double down the left-field line.

Angelo State faced adversity for the first time in the top of the fourth inning after Washburn loaded the bases with no outs, but the Rambelles would escape the jam. Molina, the San Bernardino, Calif., native, toed the rubber and proceeded to fan the next three batters to get ASU out of the jam.

Angelo State led, 5-0, entering the bottom of the sixth, but a pinch-hit, three-run home run by Carly Peters capped a four-run inning to put ASU up 9-0 and the Lady Blues succumbed to the run rule.

Molina finished with a complete-game, five-hit shutout, while striking out a season-high nine batters.

The Rambelles will return to the field Sunday, at 12:30 p.m., to take on Washburn, with a 2:30 p.m., first pitch slated for Texas-Permian Basin to conclude the ASU Blue and Gold Classic at the ASU Softball Complex.
