Weekend for Walters; ‘Belles Extend Winning Streak to Nine

Game 1 // Washburn | Game 2 // UTPB

SAN ANGELOChelsey Walters went 5-for-8 (.625) from the plate, recording four RBIs and scoring four runs to lead the nationally ranked Angelo State softball team to a pair of wins and a weekend sweep at the ASU Blue and Gold Classic in San Angelo Sunday. The eighth-ranked Rambelles improved to 9-0 on the season.

Angelo State opened the final day of the tournament with a 13-3 win against Washburn (0-4) – the 'Belles most lopsided victory of the season. Walters, the Odessa, Texas native, went 4-for-5 in the contest, while Elsamartina Apo went 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

“Offensively, we got hot and hit the ball hard,” said head coach Travis Scott. “Chelsey kept finding ways to get on base and that's what you want out of your leadoff; she's not your traditional leadoff hitter, but she finds a way to get it done.”

The Rambelles scored seven runs on five hits in the sixth, which began with a Walters lead-off triple to left center, followed by a two-run home run by Kaycee Taylor (2). The 'Belles proceeded to load the bases before Apo hit a bases-clearing double. ASU would tack on two more runs in the frame and an additional run in the fifth for a 13-3 win.

Mary Kate McKay threw 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one run to pick up her fifth win of the season.

In the final game of the tournament, the Rambelles outlasted Texas-Permian Basin (4-5) behind the left arm of Claire Molina. The junior tossed her second-consecutive complete-game shutout in the 4-0 victory against the Lady Falcons. Molina went 7.0 innings and allowed just four hits, while fanning six.

“Mary Kate and Claire pitched really well for us this weekend,” said Scott. “It was a question mark entering the season, but both of them are throwing the ball pretty well so we're excited about it.”

With two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, Walters came through with a two-run double off the wall to plate Amanda Wilhelm and Jasmaine Moore, giving Angelo State a 3-0 lead. Alix Dean would then single to plate Walters for the 4-0 win.

Angelo State will return to the diamond Feb. 18 at 10 a.m., against Nebraska-Omaha in the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational in Durant, Okla.
