DURANT, Okla. –
Chelsey Walters pushed her hitting streak to 10-consecutive games, while
Mary Kate McKay improved to 6-0 as the nationally ranked Angelo State softball team moved to 11-0 on the season after a pair of wins at the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational in Durant, Okla., Friday.
The third-ranked Rambelles were pitted against No. 8 Nebraska-Omaha (5-1) in the first game of the tournament. Angelo State (11-0) would outlast the Mavericks, 5-1, in the top-10 showdown behind the left arm of McKay, who threw a complete-game allowing just three hits.
“Mary Kate pitched a great game against an excellent team,” said head coach
Travis Scott. “She hit her spots and was able to keep the Mavericks off balance forcing a lot of ground balls.”
Angelo State broke open a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning when
Alix Dean hit a bases-clearing double to plate three runs putting the 'Belles up, 4-1. Angelo State would manufacture another run in the sixth after Walters stole second and was driven home by senior All-American
Kaycee Taylor.
The 'Belles would run-rule Central Missouri, 9-1, in their second game of the tournament.
Brittany Astle (2),
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti (2) and Taylor (3) all had multiple hits in the win.
Jessica Newsome threw 4.0 innings and allowed just two hits to tally her second win of the year.
Angelo State will return to the diamond Feb. 19 at 10 a.m., against Ouachita Baptist followed by a 4 p.m., first pitch slated with Central Oklahoma.
