DURANT, Okla. – The nationally-ranked Angelo State softball team swept through the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational with two more victories Sunday in Durant, Okla.
Morgan Spearman and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti each recorded three RBIs on the day, as the third-ranked Rambelles improved to 15-0 on the year.
“We're continuing to play well in all aspects of the game and it's fun to be a part of,” said Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott. “Our defense and pitching have both been excellent for us throughout the year.”
The offense is also clicking for ASU, as the 'Belles have outscored their opponents, 110-29, this season.
In its first game of the day, Angelo State scored two first-inning runs against Henderson State off a two-run homer by Tafiti. The Kalaheo, Hawaii native now has five home runs on the season, which leads the Lone Star Conference.
Kaycee Taylor would later triple in the bottom of the sixth to drive in two more runs and secure the 'Belles a 5-1 victory.
ASU's
Mary Kate McKay was the winning pitcher in the contest and improved to 8-0 on the year.
The Rambelles' record remained unblemished, earning a 4-1 win over Northeastern State (3-5) in their final game of the tournament. ASU's 15-0 start is the second-best start in program history behind the 2003 season, where the 'Belles went 19-0.
ASU trailed 1-0 entering the fourth inning, but Spearman hit a bases-clearing double to centerfield which put the 'Belles up, 3-1. Angelo State tacked on another run in the fifth frame, after senior All-American
Alix Dean hit her seventh double of the season to bring home
Chelsey Walters.
Jessica Newsome (4-0) picked up the win, allowing just three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Angelo State will return to the diamond Feb. 26 for a doubleheader against St. Edward's at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo. The first pitch is slated for noon with the second game to follow.
