AUSTIN – Angelo State's
Krista Czarnecki opened the St. Edwards Tournament as the leader of the Rambelles with a 10-over-81 and helped the team shoot a 332 in windy conditions at the Grey Rock Golf Course on Monday. The Belles posted the sixth-best team score out of 16 teams, at 48 over par on the par-71, 6,060-yard course. Incarnate Word led after the opening round with a 310 team score.
Czarnecki was joined in the top 25 by senior
Randee Stegman who shot a 11-over-82 while
Courtney Rutledge (13-over-84),
Maury McCormick (14-over-85), and
Skylar Smith (14-over-85) also contributed to the team total for the Rambelles. Angelo State freshman
Makenzie Stone competed as an individual and shot a 9-over-80 to finish the first day in tied for 13th. Only 12 of the 86 players in the field managed to shoot less than 80 on the day.
“We're excited,” ASU head coach Kathleen Price said. “It's nice to have a little bit of competition and we've switched up the order and our top five this week. The girls know they have to play hard to stay in the top five and there is some competition now. I think it's going to make us a better team.
“It was very windy out here today. I bet the winds today were at least 30 mph,” Price said. “We had a lot of good ups and downs. Maury had a quad (bogey) on a hole and still ended up shooting an 85, and she had 11 pars today and that's something to build on.”
Stone tied her season-low of 80 for the third time this season, but this one did not count towards the team score. Incarnate Word's Joanna De Sa Peirera was the overall leader with a one-over-72.
“
Makenzie Stone just played solid,” Price said. “She made a beautiful par save on (her) eighth hole that was a par three.”
The second and final round begins Tuesday with a shotgun start as the Belles look to move up the leader board.
