‘Belles Continue to Roll at St. Mary’s Tournament

UTPB Game 1 // Final Stats | St. Edwards // Final Stats

SAN ANTONIO
– The nationally-ranked Angelo State softball team was super on Super Bowl Sunday, outscoring its opponents a combined 15-3 en route to a 4-0 start at the St. Mary's Tournament in San Antonio. Senior Alix Dean went 3-for-6 on the day and knocked in four RBIs in the wins over Texas-Permian Basin and St. Edward's.

The No. 8 Rambelles (4-0) began the day with an 8-2 win against Texas-Permian Basin (1-3). ASU's Jessica Newsome threw 4.1 innings without surrendering a walk, while allowing just one earned run in her first collegiate victory. Kaycee Taylor and Kacie Easley each recorded two RBIs in the game.

“Jess went out there and pitched great for us, and it was nice to see her build her confidence back up,” said Angelo State head coach Travis Scott. “Offensively, we didn't swing it great, but we saw a little bit of progress. We scored a few runs off of UTPB errors, but we'll build off that.”

The 'Belles earned a 7-1 victory against St. Edward's (2-2) behind the left arm of Mary Kate McKay. McKay went 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out seven.

“Mary Kate had her curve ball and drop ball working (Sunday) and forced a lot of ground balls,” said Scott. “She was able to change her speed and forced (St. Edward's) to chase some bad pitches. Mary Kate threw a great game for us.”

Chelsey Walters, ASU's sure-handed shortstop, went 2-for-4 against the Hilltoppers and scored three times. Her first run came in the bottom of the first, after Dean drove in the Odessa native to give the 'Belles an early 1-0 lead. St. Edward's would eventually tie the game in the third, 1-1.

The 'Belles regained the lead in the fourth inning, which began with an Elsamartina Apo walk followed by a Brittnay Astle sacrifice bunt. Amanda Wilhelm then proceeded to launch a two-run home run over the left-field fence to give Angelo State a 3-1 lead. The Rambelles were able to tack on another run in the frame when Walters stole home.

Angelo State added another run in the fifth inning when DeeshanaLynn Tafiti hit her second home run of the year, followed by two more in the sixth to secure the 7-1 victory.

The St. Mary's Tournament will conclude Monday for the Rambelles with a single game against Abilene Christian at noon in San Antonio.
