SAN ANGELO – The nationally-ranked Angelo State softball team hit eight doubles on the day, including three by
Morgan Spearman, to earn a pair of victories against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Lone Star Conference South Divisional opener at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo Friday.
In game one, the Javelinas (13-12, LSC 0-2) scored in the opening inning but that did not deter ASU, the top-ranked team in the country, from scoring in five-consecutive innings and earning a 5-3 win. All-Americans
Kacie Easley and
Kaycee Taylor combined to go 4-for-7 and drive in a pair of runs in the contest, while
Mary Kate McKay and
Claire Molina shared duties in the circle, allowing just five hits and three runs in 7.0 innings of work.
Angelo State's (22-1, LSC 2-0) bats rattled in the second game, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits. The Rambelles jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning after recording six-consecutive hits, which began with three-straight doubles. The 'Belles would tack on a pair in the third inning and three more in the fourth to secure a 12-0 win.
“We worked on hitting all week long and it's great to see our hard work is paying off,” said Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott. “The girls kept their weight balanced and hit the ball on a line (Friday).”
Offensively, the 'Belles were led by Spearman and
Chelsey Walters, who both had multiple hits and RBIs in the contest. Spearman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Walters also went 2-for-3 and brought home four runs.
The pitching staff had its best outing of the season, as the duo of McKay and
Jessica Newsome combined to throw a no hitter. McKay threw 4.0 innings of shutout ball before handing the ball over to Newsome to retire the fifth in order.
Angelo State will look for the series sweep against the Javelinas in the final game of the series beginning March 12 at 1 p.m., at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo.
