SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team was outhit for just the fourth time all season, as the Rambelles dropped a 5-1 decision to Incarnate Word in a Lone Star South Divisional contest at the ASU Softball Complex in San Angelo Friday.
Chelsey Walters recorded the Rambelles only two hits in the game.
Incarnate Word (16-9, 3-1 LSC South) struck early, plating three runs on four hits in the top of the first. UIW's Whitney Waltrip, Monica Acuna and Chelsea Muskopf all had RBI singles in the frame for the Cardinals.
“We had a tough first inning,” said Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott. “They hit the ball hard, had a couple bloopers fall and scored three early runs on us. Give them credit.”
Angelo State (23-2, 3-1 LSC South), the top-ranked team in the nation, looked to chip away at the deficit after Walters belted a triple off the right-center field fence to lead off the game. The Odessa native would eventually score on an illegal pitch, however, that would be the 'Belles lone run of the contest, as the 'Belles struggled to produce offensively.
“We got one back, but we couldn't quite rebound from the first inning,” said Scott. “Offensively, we were right there on (Briana Sanchez), but got under a few balls. If we can turn those into line drives we'll be alright (Saturday).”
ASU's
Mary Kate McKay (10-1) suffered her first loss of the season, after giving up five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Cardinals' Briana Sanchez picked up the win and improved to 12-1 on the year.
Angelo State will conclude the three-game series against Lone Star Conference foe Incarnate Word with a doubleheader Saturday at the ASU Softball Complex.
