SAN ANGELO – Five Angelo State student-athletes were named to the All-Region indoor track and field team and four were selected to participate in the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championship field, as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Bree Bennett (60-meter hurdles), Andria Nussey (800-meter), Chrystal Ruiz (pentathlon), Summer Sutherland (pole vault) and Kelsey Wilson (pole vault) were all selected as All-South Central Region honorees by the association Tuesday. The top five peformers from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction for the 2011 indoor season.
Furthermore, Nussey, Ruiz, Wilson and freshman Kati Holly (high jump), who all previously posted provisional qualifying times, have been selected to compete in Albuquerque, N.M. (March 11-12).
Nussey ran the sixth-fastest 800-meter time in Division II earlier this season when she posted a 2:12.05 at the Texas Tech Indoor Open (Feb. 5). Nussey ran a 2:06.37 to finish second at the 2010 Women's Outdoor National Championships.
Ruiz made the best of a whirlwind trip to Michigan earlier this season as she posted the third-best Division II indoor pentathlon this season with 3658 points at the Grand Valley State Big Meet.
Holly and Wilson represented ASU well in the field events during the team's inagural indoor season. Holly, a freshman, jumped 5-7.25 feet in the high jump to win the Texas Tech Octagonal and Wilson, a junior college transfer, vaulted 12-1.5 feet at the Texas Tech Indoor Open.
