ASU Spring Break Multis Meet Central Page
SAN ANGELO – A trio of All-Americans led the first day of competition at the Angelo State Spring Break Multi-Event Meet at the LeGrand Sports Complex Thursday. Junior Carrasco were also among the 37 heptathletes and decathletes to compete.
Lettow, a 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor champion in the pentathlon, held an 85-point advantage over Angelo State's Chrystal Ruiz after posting 3,327 points through four events. Wildman, a two-time NCAA Division III Indoor champion in the pentathlon, led the Gold Decathlon with 3,815 points through four events, and Smothers, an All-American in the decathlon at the 2010 NJCAA Outdoor Championships, led the Blue Decathlon with 3,539 points.
Holmes was Angelo State's top performer and was sitting in the middle of the 12-man, Blue Decathlon field with 3,276 points. The sophomore from Iraan, Texas, got off to an ideal start when he tied for second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.32 seconds. Holmes and Macarthy had nearly identical times in the day's final event, the 400-meter run, when they posted times of 51.05 and 51.07, respectively. Macarthy was in eighth place with 3,183 points and
Junior Carrasco was in 10th with 3,168 points.
Some of the top performances on the men's side included Wichita State's Aaron Young in the 100-meter dash (10.85 seconds), WSU's Austin Bahner in the long jump (23'9.8”), Central Missouri's Shawn Boss in the shot put (40'4.75”), Mac Griffith in the high jump (6'7”) and CMU's Brent Vogel in the 400-meter run (48.99).
Lettow set the tone early on the women's side with wins in the 100-meter hurdles (13.98 seconds) and high jump (5'8”), before being bested in the shot put. Ruiz, who battled Lettow to first and second-place finishes a few weeks ago as both surpassed the previous meet record in the pentathlon at the indoor championships, was close behind in both events with a time of 14 seconds in the 100 hurdles and a high jump of 5'7”. Central Missouri's Zoe Sharplin posted the best shot put mark at 39'3.75”, and Wichita State's Tanya Friesen edged Ruiz for the fastest time in the 200-meter run at 25.04 seconds.
Competition in all three events concludes Friday, with the Blue Decathlon starting things off at 10:30 a.m.
