‘Belles Take Pair from Dustdevils

Game 1 // Final Box | Game 2 // Final Box

SAN ANGELO
– With the game tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh, ASU's Chelsey Walters hit a walk-off home run over the left-field fence to give the nationally-ranked Angelo State softball team a 3-2 win over Texas A&M-International Sunday at the ASU Softball Complex in the first game of the doubleheader. The top-ranked 'Belles would improve to 20-1 on the season after earning a 7-6 victory in game two.

Texas A&M-International (10-19) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but the 'Belles countered in the bottom half. Two-time All-American Alix Dean singled to left which brought home Walters from second and tied the game, 1-1. Angelo State tacked on another run in the fourth, while TAMIU plated their second run in the sixth and the squads were tied, 2-2, entering the seventh.

ASU's Claire Molina struck out the side in the top of the seventh and turned it over to the offense. On a 2-1 count and one out, Walters ended the game after she hit a walk-off homer over the left-field wall to give Angelo State a 3-2 win.

“Chelsey's got some pop in her bat and proved it (Sunday),” said Angelo State head coach Travis Scott. “She was able to turn on an inside pitch and hit it over despite the wind blowing in.”

It was a joint effort in the circle for the 'Belles, as Mary Kate McKay threw 5.1 innings of work before handing the ball over to Molina, who threw 1.2 innings of shutout softball.

In game two, both teams started off strong offensively, as the Dustdevils scored four runs in the first, while the 'Belles plated five. The two squads traded runs and were tied, 6-6, going into the sixth. In the bottom half, ASU's Elsa Apo took advantage of the third baseman playing deep and laid a bunt single down the third-base line. She would advance to second on a Morgan Spearman single to left field, and would then score after Brittany Astle laced a single to right which proved to be the game-winner.

Molina picked up her second win of the day and is now 8-0 on the season, while Kaycee Taylor went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Angelo State will begin Lone Star Conference South Divisional play March 11 against Texas A&M-Kingsville in San Angelo at the ASU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the second game to follow.

“Every day is a dog fight in Lone Star South play and I don't expect that to change,” said Scott. “Kingsville has a good new coach and a scrappy team and we're just ready to play.”
