‘Belles Sweep Wildcats on Senior Day

Game 1 | Final Box // Game 2 | Final Box

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State seniors Brittany Astle, Alix Dean and Kaycee Taylor left their mark on Senior Day, as the trio combined to go 10-for-16 in the doubleheader and secure a series sweep over Lone Star Conference foe Abilene Christian Friday at the ASU Softball Complex.

In game one, the teams traded runs in the first inning until No. 17 Angelo State (39-8, 14-4 LSC South) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third after capitalizing on three Wildcat errors. With runners in scoring position, ASU's Chelsey Walters executed a suicide squeeze which allowed Jasmaine Moore to score from third. The 'Belles manufactured their final run of the inning when Dean hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

The bats continued to rattle in the fourth inning for the 'Belles, as Angelo States scored six runs on five hits. The biggest hit of the inning happened to be a milestone for Dean. The senior from Collinsville hit a one-hopper off the right-centerfield wall and legged out her 15th double of the season. She now has 62 career doubles at Angelo State which ties Brittney Cargill for the most doubles in program history.

The Rambelles went on to run-rule Abilene Christian (26-26, 9-9 LSC South) in game one, 9-1. ASU's Mary Kate McKay (13-2) tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Abilene Christian's Melissa Mendoza led off game two with a stand-up double, and eventually scored after Lyndi Smith singled to left field. ACU's 1-0 lead was erased in the bottom of the second when Kacie Easley hit a solo home run into the visitor's bullpen.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Taylor smacked her team-high 16th double of the season to centerfield. After a fly out to left, Dean singled to right field, which scored her classmate from second and gave the 'Belles a 2-1 advantage. Astle wanted to add to the senior seminar, so she launched her sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning to give ASU a 3-1 edge.

The two-run cushion was wiped clean in the fifth inning, as the Wildcats scored two runs on four hits to tie the contest. Erin Gilliland and Medonza each had RBI-singles in the frame. Despite ACU's late surge, the 17th-ranked 'Belles would use the long ball to go back upfront for good. DeeshanaLynn Tafiti hit her ninth homer of the season, and the 'Belles outlasted the Wildcats, 4-3, to earn the series sweep.

Claire Molina tossed a complete game, and improved to 20-4 on the season. She's just the second player in the LSC to eclipse the 20-win plateau behind Midwestern State's Britteny Tanner (26). Molina threw 7.0 innings and struck out three without surrendering a walk.

The final regular-season matchup for the Rambelles is a three-game road series against Texas Woman's in Denton April 29-30. The 'Belles will take the diamond at 6 p.m., on Friday for a single game, followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
