SAN ANGELO – Angelo State senior
Alix Dean climbed into second place in the ASU record books after knocking her 58th career double to score a pair as the No. 10 Rambelles defeated Lone Star Conference opponent Eastern New Mexico, 12-1, at the ASU Softball Complex Friday. The Collinsville native is four doubles shy of tying Brittney Cargill's record of 62.
In its first night game of the season, Angelo State (31-5, 8-2 LSC South) scored 12 runs on just five hits, while drawing a season-best 12 walks against the Zias (10-27, 2-8 LSC South).
“We had good approaches at the plate last week, and we carried it into (Friday's) game,” said head coach
Travis Scott. “We didn't chase pitches, and were patient at the plate.”
The Rambelles led off the game with the first six batters reaching base.
Chelsey Walters was hit by the opening pitch of the game, followed by a pair of ASU walks. With the bases loaded,
Kacie Easley smacked a three-run double to right-center field to clear the bases. The 'Belles would go on to score five runs on just two hits.
The second inning mirrored the first, as seven-consecutive 'Belles would reach base. The inning was highlighted by Dean's two-run double to the right-field gap. The two-time All-American now has 11 doubles on the year, which ties for fifth in the Lone Star Conference. The 'Belles scored six runs on three hits, while taking advantage of four Eastern New Mexico walks in the frame. ASU would go on to win, 12-1.
Claire Molina picked up the win, improving to 16-2 on the season. In 4.0 innings of work, the junior struck out six and allowed just one unearned run.
Jessica Newsome toed the rubber in the fifth to close the game.
The two squads will return to the diamond Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., at the ASU Softball Complex. The 'Belles will continue their fight against cancer as ASU looks to “Battle Cancer, One Pitch at a Time” in an effort to raise awareness for young adult cancer.
