SAN ANGELO – Alix the Great: Angelo State senior
Alix Dean went 4-for-6 with three doubles and a home run, while driving in eight and scoring four to help lead the No. 10 Rambelles to a pair of wins and a series sweep over Lone Star Conference foe Eastern New Mexico at the ASU Softball Complex Saturday. With the three doubles, Dean is now just one shy of tying the school's all-time doubles record of 62 set by Brittney Cargill.
Chelsey Walters set the tone for Angelo State (33-5, 10-2 LSC South) by leading off game one with a stand-up double. This was just one of 13 extra base hits on the day for the Rambelles. The next blast came off the bat of Dean. The two-time All-American smashed her first home run of the season over the left-field fence to put ASU up, 4-0.The Collinsville native went 3-for-3 in the game with two doubles, a home run, six RBIs and three runs scored.
If some is good more is better, as the 'Belles scored six runs on five hits in the second inning. ASU's
Kaycee Taylor,
Kacie Easley and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti all smacked doubles, while
Jasmaine Moore and
Allyson Seider singled in the frame.
Angelo State's last offensive surge came in the fourth inning. The 'Belles took advantage of four walks by scoring four runs on just two hits. One of those hits came off the bat of Dean, who ripped her second double of the game to left-center field, which plated a pair.
Eastern New Mexico (10-31, 2-10 LSC South) made a late-game charge, scoring six runs in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the 'Belles would run-rule the Zias, 15-7, in five innings.
Mary Kate McKay picked up the win, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out three. The freshman from Madill, Okla., is now 11-2 on the year.
In game two, Angelo State would outlast the Zias, 7-2, to secure the series sweep, and improved to 32-6 in the all-time series. In the bottom of the first, Dean found the left-center gap for her third double of the day that plated two. She would eventually come around and score, giving ASU a 3-1 lead after one.
Angelo State continued to hammer the ball, as Elsa Apo and Tafiti hit back-to-back jacks in the third inning. The 'Belles would tack on two more runs in the fourth to secure a 7-2 victory.
Jessica Newsome (6-1) threw 6.0 innings, striking out four and allowing just one earned run before handing the ball over to
Claire Molina for the final inning. Molina recorded two of the three outs by strikeouts and now has a team-high 93 on the year.
