SAN ANGELO – The No. 18-ranked Angelo State volleyball team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday, falling 3-2 in a Lone Star Conference contest against No. 17 West Texas A&M at Stephens Arena. The Lady Buffs (13-1, 7-1 LSC) won the match, 13-25, 25-12, 25-16, 22-25, 15-7, in the battle of the two nationally ranked LSC teams.
“We played like a roller coaster,” ASU senior
Celeste Bonter said.
“It was a very evenly matched game where we took turns beating each other up,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “It was a game of adjustments throughout. That's what a great match is all about. I would have liked to see us execute better in the fifth set. We put ourselves in a tough situation with the errors we were making and we couldn't get going there in the end.”
Debbie Ohl led the Belles with 13 kills and added 13 digs, while
Celeste Bonter contributed 10 kills and five digs.
Shelby Wilt paced the team with 28 digs, while reining LSC Setter of the Week
Alex Woolsey finished with 39 assist.
Stormi Lancaster led the Lady Buffs with 12 kills, while Lacy Harris had 38 assists in West Texas A&M's win. Lauren Beville and Halie Horton led the Lady Buffs with 27 and 20 digs, respectively.
The Belles (15-1, 7-1 LSC) travel to Kansas this week to play in the Lady Blues Crossover Tournament in Topeka, Kan. ASU will open the tournament on Friday with matches against Truman State and Emporia State and will play Southwest Baptist and Washburn on Saturday.
Additional Quotes
Head coach Chuck Waddington
On moving on from the Belles' first loss of the season:
We have to have a short memory. We have to put this game behind us and get better. You look at what you didn't do well and get better at it. We didn't do better than them on the bigger points and we'll have to do that in matches later on in the season. I'll start putting them in more pressure situations during practice so that we're better prepared. We are still a very confident team and know that we can match up with the best teams.
On playing at West Texas A&M later this season:
We will look forward to playing them again, but there is a lot to do in between then. We have to get back in the gym and get better at the things that cost us this game.
