DENVER, Colo. – The Angelo State volleyball team's season came to an end with a 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 17-25, 27-25) loss to West Texas A&M in the finals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships on Saturday at the Regis Fieldhouse.
The Belles (29-6) fell in an early hole in the match after dropping the first two sets, but fought back to the take the third set and held a lead for much of the fourth set before the Lady Buffs charged back to close out the match. West Texas A&M improves to 33-4 on the season and will travel to Pensacola, Fla. for next week's NCAA DII Volleyball Championships.
“I love this team and they fought hard,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “We didn't start the match off very well and didn't match their intensity. They came ready to play and we finally got to their emotional level (in the third set) and started playing pretty well. We had an opportunity to push it to five and didn't capitalize.”
Maddie Huth led Angelo State with 17 kills, a .500 hitting percentage on 30 attacks and added four blocks.
Alex Woolsey had 47 assists and six digs against the Lady Buffs.
Shelbi Goode added 15 kills and was named to the all-tournament team along with Huth and Woolsey.
Shelby Wilt led the Belles with 11 digs with
Haley Bianco and
Katie MacLeay each having 10 digs.
Emily Booth had seven kills and six blocks with
Kaelen Valdez contributing six kill and
Leah McWilliams five.
ASU had a .165 hitting percentage in the match – including starting the match with a -.054 hitting percentage in the first set and then showcasing their talents in the third set with a .364 percentage. West Texas A&M, which outblocked the Belles 18-10, came out on fire with a .292 percentage in the first set and then hit .412 in the second. Kamryn Hayes led WT with 12 kills, while Lacy Hayes had 45 assists and 12 digs.
The Belles are now 4-7 all-time in the NCAA tournament, including going 3-2 in it the past two seasons.
