SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State head softball coach
Travis Scott got everything he asked for on his birthday Saturday.
The 16th-ranked Rambelles scored 22 runs on 25 hits, while his starting pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts in a pair of wins over Central Oklahoma at the ASU Softball Complex. Angelo State (3-2) earned a 14-6 victory in game one, before cruising to an 8-1 win in the final game in the 40 degree weather.
“It's always nice to come out and swing the bats the way we did on a very cold day," Scott said. “We didn't step in the batter's box timid; it was a fun day considering the elements.”
ASU catcher
Kacie Easley was 5-for-6 in the twin bill with two home runs, a double and five RBIs. The production came throughout the lineup, as
Elsamartina Apo,
Morgan Spearman,
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti and
Chelsey Walters all had three RBIs on day.
“We're all seeing the ball well when we step into the box,” Easley said. “Hitting seems to be contagious and once one person seems to get on that hitting streak we all do, and it's just fun to be a part of.”
As the offense continued to put up runs, the pair of lefty pitchers continued to mow through the UCO (0-2) lineup.
Claire Molina (1-2) picked up the win in game one, allowing just three hits and one run in 4.2 innings of work. Game two was highlighted by a career-high 10 strikeouts from
Mary Kate McKay. The Madill, Okla., native tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits and one run in the win.
“It feels good to come out and get two wins on our home field with the community support behind you,” McKay said. “We're a family, and to come out here and have fun and play the way we did is exciting.”
In game one, the Belles took a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the third before erupting for six runs. The two-out rally began when Spearman hit a bases-clearing double to left-center field. Walters then traded places with Spearman, as she lined a two-bagger down the left-field line. The third consecutive double would come from the bat of Easley, which easily scored Walters to give ASU a 10-0 lead.
The Bronchos' offense came alive in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a Kayce Raines three-run homer. UCO would score six runs on six hits to make it a 12-6 deficit.
The momentum was short lived, as Easley hit a two-run homer in the bottom half to run-rule the Bronchos.
Central Oklahoma saw its first lead of the day in the first inning in game two. The Bronchos took advantage of an ASU error, and were able to grab an early 1-0 advantage. The lead was short lived, as the Rambelles' offense plated two in the bottom half. With two on and two out, Apo found the alleyway in right center to score Easley and Walters.
The one-run lead was all McKay needed, as the crafty sophomore would not allow a runner past second base the rest of the game.
Angelo State would go on to win 8-1 and improve to 12-11 all-time against the Bronchos.
Angelo State returns to the diamond on Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against Texas A&M-International in Laredo.
