DURANT, Okla. – Hours after hitting a game-winning grand slam against Arkansas-Monticello, Rambelle's outfielder
Morgan Spearman decided to do it again. The sophomore took the first pitch over the center-field wall to put Angelo State up 5-3 against Henderson State in the South Central Shootout.
“I'm not really sure what to even say,” Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott said. “Morgan was huge for us, and I know this is a weekend she'll remember for quite some time. It's not every day you'll have two game-winning grand slams.”
Angelo State (8-2) struggled offensively for the first time all season, trailing 3-1 to Henderson entering the sixth inning. The 16th-ranked Belles changed their approach, as they started playing small ball. After a walk by
April Breshears, the Belles' laid down back-to-back bunt singles by
Lauren Smith and
Brittney Davis to load the bases. After a strikeout, Spearman walked to the plate and with a swing of the bat put ASU up 5-3.
“With the bases loaded, we forced them to throw strikes and ended up leaving over the middle of the plate,” said Scott. “Morgan took it from there. She hit a shot to center field on the first pitch she saw.”
Belles' starting pitcher
Mary Kate McKay went the distance and secured their eighth consecutive win. The sophomore is 4-0 on the season and has now tossed three complete games this season.
Angelo State returns to the Durant Multi-Sports Complex for a 4 p.m. game against Missouri Western on Saturday on day two of the South Central Shootout.
