SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State women's golf team started its spring slate with a score of 323 (+35) after the first round Monday at the 11-team St. Mary's Invitational and finished the day in fourth place. The Belles are only five strokes away from third place at the par-72, 5,407 yard course at Dominion Country Club.
Maury McCormick was the top Rambelle scorer on the day, firing a total of 38-40 – 78 and is tied for sixth individually through the first round.
“Maury just played Maury golf,” Belles head coach Kathleen Price said. “She went out and she had a bad finishing hole on No. 18 hole, but other than that she ended up and went out at 40 (on the back) then on the front she shot a 38.”
McCormick was one of four ASU golfers who were in the top-15 at the conclusion of the day.
Abby Bobo and
Courtney Rutledge had 81's on the afternoon along with
Ashley Bartholomew, who competed as an individual.
Taylor Griffin (41-42 – 83) sits in the top-25 while
Krista Czarnecki had a five stroke improvement after the turn to round out the team scores.
Makenzie Stone also competed for the Belles and also shaved two strokes on the back nine.
“Everybody else struggled on the front a little bit more,” Price said. “Most of everybody else had a little tougher time.
“This is just the kind of course where you have to play smart. You don't need your driver on every hole and you have to patient.”
St. Edward's led after the opening round with a 303 (+15) score, ten strokes better than second place Tarleton State. The Rattler's Wallis Spears (34-39 – 73) shot one-over par to lead the in the individual standings.
The tournament will conclude with its final round tomorrow. Czarnecki will be the first Belle to tee-off at 8:30 a.m.
