Belles Prevail In 9-inning Slugfest, 13-12

Final Box

DENTON, Texas
– When asked what plays stood out in the 13-12 extra-inning win over Washburn on Friday, Angelo Stated head coach Travis Scott really wasn't sure.

“Honestly, there were so many big plays it's hard to keep track of them all,” Scott said. “All I know is that it was a dog fight. Both teams gave it everything they had, but we were able to come out with a win.”

After two scoreless innings in Game 2 of the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling, the runs began to pour in for both teams. The No. 8 Belles (10-2) struck first in the bottom of the third plating two. DeeshanaLynn Tafiti took an outside pitch to right field for a two-run double scoring Jasmaine Moore and Morgan Spearman.

The lead quickly disappeared for ASU, as the Lady Blues (1-3) scored four runs on two hits in the top of the fourth. After a single and two walks, freshman Mallorie Monhollon smacked a grand slam to give Washburn its first lead of the game. A solo homer in the top of the fifth by Alex Zordel put the Lady Blues up, 5-2.

It would take just three batters in the bottom half before the game was knotted at 5-all. ASU's Chelsey Walters led-off with a double, followed by back-to-back jacks. Kacie Easley hit a two-run shot, followed by Tafiti's opposite field homer.

“They kept pitching Shana outside and she was selective at the plate,” Scott said. “She waited for a pitch she could hit hard and just took it the other way.”

An RBI single from April Breshears and an RBI double from Lauren Smith in the sixth stretched ASU's lead to 7-5 entering the top of the seventh.

Washburn's offensive exploded in the top half, scoring five runs on four hits to grab a 10-7 lead. The big hit again came from the bat of Monhollon, as the Topeka, Kan., native hit a three-run homer. She finished the day 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and three runs scored.

The pressure shifted back to the Belles' dugout in the bottom half. The Rambelles wasted no time, as the first three batters reached safely to load the bases. After a fielder's choice, Tafiti was due up. The senior again went the other way to score two making it a one-run game (10-9). An infield single by Breshears would tie the game and force extra innings.

Washburn and ASU both plated a run in the eighth and the Lady Blues would tack on another in the top of the ninth.

Down 12-11 in the bottom of the ninth, Angelo State faced the same situation the inning before – one to tie, two to win. The Belles loaded the bases with just one out, before Smith hit a walk-off single to score Elsamartina Apo and Walters.

The Belles 13-12 victory pushed their winning streak to 10 games.

Claire Molina (4.1 innings) and Mary Kate McKay (4.2) shared duties in the circle, with McKay grabbing the win.

Angelo State returns to the North Lakes Park for two games on Saturday in the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling. The Belles begin with a 9 a.m. contest against Fort Hays State before ending the day against Texas-Permian Basin at 4:30 p.m.
