Final Box
DENTON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team had another memorable comeback in the works after
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but the Belles would fall 8-6 to Texas-Permian Basin in nine at the 2012 Best Western Spring Fling.
The Falcons (3-14) took advantage of an ASU (11-3) error in the second to help build a 4-0 lead. UTPB's Courtney Cernoch highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing double to centerfield.
The No. 8 Belles trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but
Carly Peters made it a 5-3 game after unleashing her second home run of the season. The two-run shot scored
Lauren Smith from second.
UTPB manufactured a run in the seventh to make it a 6-3 affair.
No lead is safe with Angelo State's high-powered offense and neither was this one.
Carly Peters and
Morgan Spearman had back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Two batters later, Tafiti hit her third home run in as many games to tie the game at 6-6.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Falcons were able to produce two runs on no hits in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead.
The Belles would get runners on the corners with two outs, but would come up short in the final inning.
Kat Massey would get the start for the Belles before handing the ball over to
Mary Kate McKay in the top of the fourth. McKay (5-1) threw 6.0 innings, struck out six and allowed four runs – but only one earned – in the loss.
The Falcons took advantage of the Belles' four defensive errors, as six of their eight runs were unearned.
Angelo State returns to the North Lakes Park for its final game of the tournament at 11:15 a.m. against Central Missouri.
