Belles Tame Tigers, 7-1

Final Box
DENTON, Texas Claire Molina tossed a complete game, while DeeshanaLynn Tafiti hit her fifth home run of the season to help lead the Angelo State softball team to a 7-1 victory over Fort Hays State in Game 3 of the 2012 Best Western Spring Fling on Saturday.  The No. 8 Rambelles have now rattled of 11-consectuive wins.

Molina was dominate for the Belles (11-2), as she struck out three and allowed just one run in 7.0 innings of work. The senior lefty improved to 6-2 on the season and – according to her head coach – seems to be back to her old self.

“It was vintage Claire Molina today,” said Travis Scott. “She threw the ball hard and threw it with confidence which is encouraging. She wanted the ball and wanted to be in the circle so it's great to see her get back into her groove.”

Angelo State took advantage of a few Fort Hays State (5-3) miscues in the second to grab an early lead. Elsamartina Apo would score on an illegal pitch which would advance April Breshears to third. Because of the illegal pitch, the Tigers lost track of the pitch count on Brittney Davis. FHS thought they had struck out Davis and flipped the ball back to the circle, but that was only strike two. With the Fort Hays defense trotting to the dugout, Breshears stole home to make it a 2-0 game.

The Belles plated two more runs in the third thanks to Tafiti's two-run blast. Morgan Spearman drew a lead-off walk and two batters later Tafiti drove in her team-best 20th RBI of the season.

Leading 4-1 entering the top of the seventh, ASU scored three runs on two hits to put the game out of reach. With two on and two outs, Apo laced her fifth double of the season down the left-field line to score Chelsey Walters and Kacie Easley. The Belles would go on to win 7-1.

Angelo State returns to the North Lakes Park for its final game of the day at 4:30 p.m. against Texas-Permian Basin.
