The Grind; Belles No. 1 in Nation

NFCA Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas
– Since the day he stepped on campus in 2004, Angelo State head coach Travis Scott has pushed the Rambelle softball team to new heights.

“We were fortunate enough to win a national championship in my first year,” Scott said. “But the key is to get back to that point. We want to put the best team on the field day after day so it's a daily grind to become better.”

Over the past nine seasons, Scott has guided the Rambelles to one national championship, four NCAA South Central Region Championships, five Lone Star Conference Championships and six Lone Star Conference South Championships.

This year looks to be no different.

In the last 49 days, the Angelo State softball team climbed its way to the top of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Poll. In the preseason poll released at the beginning of February, the Rambelles were ranked No. 16, but after winning 25 of their last 26 games ASU is now the No. 1 team in the country.

Angelo State collected 11 of the 16 first-place votes and totaled 389 points in Wednesday's official ranking. Coach Scott and his players are no strangers to the number-one ranking. Last season, the Rambelles began the season 19-0 and owned the No. 1 slot for the entire month of March.

“We want to have the target on our back,” Scott said. “It means we are doing something right, and that we get each team's best shot. Our girls know that nothing comes easy, and they have to work for everything they get. You can't take any days off.”

Senior outfielder Jasmaine Moore knows what it means to put on the blue and gold jersey. The Pampa native has spent the last four years playing under Coach Scott and can sum his coaching style up in one word – efficient.

“Since I've been here, there have been different dynamics to each team, but Coach Scott gets the most out of each one of them,” Moore said. “Whether it's a power team or a speed team, he makes the most out of the talent he's given.”

Scott has averaged 46 wins per season over the last eight years and accumulated a 395-119 record while at Angelo State.

As the wins pile up for ASU, so do the stands at the ASU Softball Complex. One of those fans is current Belle's outfielder Luz'Ce Baca. Baca went to Central High School in San Angelo and often attended ASU games hoping to one day be a part it. Her dream came to fruition in 2011 when she walked on to the team as a freshman.

“It's really an amazing feeling putting on the Angelo State jersey every day and playing for Coach Scott,” Baca said. “He knows what he's doing, and utilizes every player to the best of their ability to help the team. I'm just glad I get to be a part of that.”

Baca and the rest of the No. 1-ranked Rambelles will put on the ASU jersey for a three-game series against 23rd-ranked West Texas A&M in Canyon on March 23-24. The series opens with a doubleheader on Friday at Lady Buff yard beginning at 1 p.m.
