SAN ANGELO, Texas – You cannot change the past, but you can prepare for the future. That's the message Angelo State head softball coach
Travis Scott relayed to his team in preparation for a nonconference doubleheader against St. Mary's on Tuesday after dropping their first series of the season.
The No. 1 Rambelles (26-5) traveled to Canyon last weekend and lost two-of-three to No. 23 West Texas A&M. Although disappointed, the Belles are ready to return to the ASU Softball Complex for a 4 p.m. twin bill against the Rattlers.
“We have had midseason slumps in previous seasons, but we know that and are prepared for it," Scott said. "We talked after the game, and we just want to move forward and get back at it. The girls were upbeat in Sunday's weights, and we're ready to return to the field."
The Belles and Rattlers met earlier this season at the St. Mary's Tournament where ASU earned an 11-5 victory.
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while
Mary Kate McKay picked up the win throwing 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit. Angelo State improved to 33-25 in the all-time series.
Angelo State is hitting .353 as a team this season paced by
Elsamartina Apo (.494),
Kacie Easley (.422),
April Breshears (.410) and Tafiti (.404). Tafiti recorded four RBIs this past weekend and now has 49 on the season to compliment her team-best 12 home runs. In the circle, ASU is led by a pair of lefties.
Claire Molina has a conference best 15 wins and 86 strikeouts on the season, while McKay has a 2.35 earned run average and opponent are hitting just .237 off the sophomore.
St. Mary's head coach Donna Fields is in her 15th season at the helm, and has guided the 2012 team to a 21-15 mark. Offensively, St. Mary's is led by Shelly Lee Zawadzki and Taylor Vidrine. Zawadzki is hitting a team-best .380, while Vidrine leads the team in home runs (6), runs batted in (21) and slugging percentage (.671). In the circle, St. Mary's is paced by Emily Brittain, who is 9-3 on the season with a 2.68 earned run average.
