Rambelles host Wildcats for Rubber Match

SAN ANGELO, Texas – After splitting a doubleheader last week, Angelo State and Abilene Christian will settle the score on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a rubber match at the ASU Softball Complex.

“Abilene is a good team, so it's going to be a dog fight for seven innings,” Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. “Hopefully we will come out and play with the same intensity we did all last week to secure a victory and a series win.”

In the twin bill on April 10 in Abilene, the No. 12 Rambelles earned a 7-2 victory in Game 2 which salvaged a split after dropping the first game, 8-4. ASU's Lauren Smith recorded two home runs in the second game including a three-run bomb in the fifth inning.

Angelo State (38-8, 19-4 LSC) has hit for power all season, as the Rambelles have outslugged their opponents .540 to .361. Elsamartina Apo has paced the Belles' offense this season. The senior is hitting .449 with a .575 on-base percentage. Another top contributor is Morgan Spearman. The sophomore hit .500 last week with two doubles, and now has a team-best 14 doubles this season.

Claire Molina and Mary Kate McKay have led the Belles in the circle. Molina recorded her conference best 20th win last week against Tarleton and is 20-4 on the season. The senior has 129 strikeouts in 142.2 innings pitched. McKay owns a 2.55 earned run average in a team-best 151.0 innings pitched. The sophomore has started 23 games and has an 18-4 record.

Under second year head coach Bobby Reeves, Abilene Christian is 28-12 overall and 14-8 in the LSC. The Wildcats are anchored by the pitching of Peyton Mosley and Caitlyn Crain. Mosley (11-5) has thrown 96.0 innings and flaunts a 1.90 earned run average.  Crain is 13-5 this season and holding opponents to a .251 batting average.

Offensively, ACU is led by Keanna Winkfield and Kimberly Briggs. Winkfield has a team-best .383 batting average and is 21-of-25 on stolen bases, while Briggs leads the team in RBIs (34) and home runs (6).
