SAN ANGELO, Texas – In an emotional game that recognized five Rambelle players prior to the first pitch on Saturday, the Angelo State softball team sent the seniors off with a 13-1 run-rule victory on Senior Day over Texas A&M-Kingsville at the ASU Softball Complex.
“It was great to get a win on Senior Day and close out the regular season with a sweep,” said senior
Jasmaine Moore. “Four years go by so fast, but I'm grateful to be here and be with such a great team. It's been a lot of fun, and I wouldn't change any of it.”
Moore, along with fellow seniors
Elsamartina Apo,
Claire Molina and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti, were all recognized at the beginning of the contest. Also being honored was junior shortstop
Chelsey Walters who is set to graduate in May and will attend chiropractic school next fall in Dallas.
“One of the best things about coaching is building relationships that will last forever,” Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott said. “These are a great group of players, and we'll certainly miss them wearing the ASU uniform. I'm just glad we were able to build an early lead and send these girls off the right way.”
Angelo State (42-8, 23-4 LSC) scored two runs in the second inning then broke the game open in the third after hanging seven runs on the scoreboard. The first seven batters reached safely to start the inning and a dozen Belles would make their way to the plate before the final out was recorded. Angelo State scored seven runs on seven hits and took advantage of a Javelina (17-33, 5-22 LSC) error to build a 9-0 lead after three.
Production came throughout the lineup as 11 different players recorded a hit. Apo,
April Breshears,
Brittney Davis,
Taylor Jensen and
Lauren Smith all finished the day with multiple RBIs, while Breshears, Tafiti and Walters all had multiple runs scored.
Molina got the final regular season start, and threw 4.1 innings allowing just one hit before getting a standing ovation. Molina finished the day with five strikeouts and improved to 23-4 on the season, which is the most wins in league play.
Sitting atop the Lone Star Conference and earning number one seed at the LSC Softball Championship, the Rambelles will take on the eighth-seeded Cameron Aggies at 7 p.m. on April 27 at Pioneer Field in Denton.
