SAN ANGELO, Texas – Although Angelo State softball's biggest fan was not in the stands for the 11-1 run-rule victory over Texas Woman's on Thursday, George McCorkle was there in spirit as every member of the Rambelle softball team wore wristbands with his initials on their arm.
“George is going through some tough times right now, and we just want him to know that we're behind him every step of the way,” Angelo State head softball coach
Travis Scott said. “We're hoping for a speedy recovery. He means the world to this program and certainly knows more about it than I do.”
McCorkle is certainly aware of the Rambelles' high-powered offense and they delivered under the lights at the ASU Softball Complex. Angelo State (32-7, 13-3 LSC) jumped to an early 5-0 lead after scoring five runs in the first inning.
Lauren Smith began the offensive explosion by belting a solo home run off the scoreboard in center field to put the Belles on the board first, 1-0. After
Kacie Easley,
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti and
Elsamartina Apo all reached base,
April Breshears drove in two more pushing the Belles' lead to 3-0.
ASU added two more runs in the second to go up 7-0 thanks to RBIs by Apo and
Chelsey Walters. The cushion was more than enough for Rambelles starting pitcher Mary Kay McKay.
The Madill, Okla. native allowed only one run and had six strikeouts in five innings as she won her fifth game in a row and 16
th of the season.
Texas Woman's scored its only run in the top of the fourth on a Jordan Readicker RBI. The Belles countered with four more in the bottom of the fifth. The highlight came off the bat of Tafiti, who hit a walkoff three-run shot to run-rule the Pioneers, 11-1. It marked the seniors 13th blast of the season.
Angelo State improves to 32-7 on the season and 13-3 in the Lone Star Conference while Texas Woman's goes to 29-10 and 11-4 in the LSC.
The Belles and Pioneers return tomorrow at the ASU Softball Complex for a doubleheader with the first game set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
