Belles Walk-off with Series Sweep of Pioneers

Game 1  ::  Game 2

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team secured a series sweep over Lone Star Conference foe Texas Woman's on Friday after a pair of walk-off wins at the ASU Softball Complex. Lauren Smith was the hero in Game 1 with her sacrifice fly to earn a 3-2 victory, while Chelsey Walters doubled down the left-field line in Game 2 to deliver a 5-4 win.

“These are big wins for us and this really puts us in great shape in league play,” Angelo State head coach Travis Scott said. “We knew we needed to come out this weekend and get at least two wins, and we ended up with the sweep. It was an emotional week and I could not be prouder of the girls.”

With the sweep, the Rambelles are now 34-7 on the season and climbed to 15-3 in the Lone Star Conference.  ASU outhit the Pioneers 27-14 during the three-game series and held TWU (29-12, 11-6 LSC) to a team average of .200. The Rambelles also did something that no other team has been able to do – throw out Bailey Vrazel attempting to steal. The sophomore was 59-of-59 entering the series, but on her first attempt Belles' starting catcher Kacie Easley threw her out for the first out of Game 1.

“I can't say enough about our starting pitching and our defense,” Scott said. “Mary Kate McKay and Claire Molina continue to just eat up innings and hit their spots. Then the defense plays great behind them giving them the support and confidence they need to throw strikes.”

Molina (17-4) went the distance in Game 1, striking out four and allowing just four hits. The senior got some run support in the third inning which was jump started after a lead-off double by Morgan Spearman. The runs would then come by RBI singles from Elsamartina Apo and DeeshanaLynn Tafiti.

After the Pioneers tied the game up at 2-all in the sixth, the Rambelles went to work in the bottom of the seventh. Spearman hit her second double of the game and eventually got to third on a wild pitch. The sophomore from Kennedale then tagged scored on Smith's sacrifice fly to center field to earn a 3-2 victory.

McKay took the ball in game three and finished with a similar line as her counterpart. The sophomore threw 7.0 innings, striking out four and working around just four hits in the win. She is now 17-3 on the season.

The Belles built a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh, but a three-run homer by the Pioneers' Kendra Sancet tied the game up, 4-4, but the Belles didn't budge.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Belles had runners on first and second with one out and Walters at the plate. The junior then connected for her first hit of the day, which was a double down the left field line and proved to be the walk-off winner.

Angelo State returns to LSC play for a doubleheader against Abilene Christian in Abilene on April 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live audio brought to you by Jeremy Bryant on AngeloSports.com or on 1260 KKSA.
