Scouting St. Edward's
St. Edward's grabbed an automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA D-II South Central Regional after winning the Heartland Conference Tournament on April 28 with a 2-0 victory against St. Mary's. The eighth seeded Hilltoppers are led by first-year head coach Lindsay Gardner.
Offensively, SEU is hitting .284 behind Marissa Thome's .392 average. The junior outfielder is one of four Hilltoppers above .300 this season. St. Edward's has outscored its opponents 186-164 this season, while slugging .371 and holding an on-base percentage of .349. However, the offense struggles against lefties, as the Hilltoppers are just 1-4 this season against south paws. For those of you keeping score at home, both of Angelo State's starting pitchers are lefties. In the circle, Sara DeBrow and Paige Sandahl are the primary hurlers for St. Edward's. Debrow leads the team with a 1.68 earned run average in 116.1 innings pitched, while Sandahl has a 3.44 ERA in 120.0 innings of work.
Series History
Angelo State is 31-11 all-time against St. Edward's including 2-0 this season. The two programs met earlier this season in Austin for a doubleheader where the Rambelles earned a 4-1 victory in Game 1 followed by a 2-1 win in Game 2. The Rambelles outhit the Hilltoppers 13-4 in the midweek, nonconference matchup.
April Breshears went 4-for-7 (.571), while
Elsamartina Apo was 3-for-6 (.500). Six different Belle players recorded an RBI in the twin bill. In the circle,
Mary Kate McKay and
Claire Molina each threw complete games. McKay had a complete-game, one-hit shutout, while Molina allowed just one run on three hits.
No Hilltopper hit above .300 against ASU, as Robledo was their top hitter at .250 (1-for-4). Although the run support was limited, Sara Debrow and Paige Sandahl each threw the ball well. Both players logged complete-game efforts allowing nine and four hits, receptively. The two combined for seven strikeouts, while DeBrow limited ASU to a .160 team batting average.
Left is Right
The Angelo State pitching staff has a pair of lefties who have passed the 20-win mark.
Claire Molina (24-4) leads the Lone Star Conference in victories at 24, while McKay (20-5) sits in second with 20. The lefties each have 33 appearances on the season with 14 complete games to their names. Their numbers continue to mirror each other, as Molina has 169.0 innings pitched compared to McKay's 167.0, respectively.
Hawaiian Punch
Elsamartina Apo and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti have combined for 116 runs batted in, 77 runs scored, 18 doubles and 24 home runs on the season. Apo - who hails from Ewa Beach, Hawaii - leads the team in batting average (.448), on-base percentage (.573) and walks (39). Tafiti, a native of Kalaheo, Hawaii, paces the team in home runs (17), RBIs (70) and slugging percentage (.786). Her 70 runs batted in is a single-season record, breaking teammate
Kacie Easley's mark of 69 set in 2010.
Home Sweet Home
The Rambelles are certainly comfortable playing in front of their fans at the ASU Softball Complex. Angelo State is currently 19-1 at home this season, with its only loss coming to St. Mary's on March 27 (7-4).
