SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State freshman Jaylen Rodgers was named the 2012 Lone Star Conference Track Athlete of the Year after her stellar performance in the 800m at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
“I think it is a very deserving honor,” head track & field coach James Reid said. “She was definitely one of the best on the track in a very competitive conference. We are excited about the success she had this year and the future potential she has at Angelo State.”
Rodgers, the 2012 LSC Champion in the 800m, capped her first season as a Rambelle as the national runner-up in the 800m. The freshman earned All-American honors with her time of 2:11.60. She is the second All-American in the 800m for the Rambelles and now owns the third, fourth and fifth fastest times in ASU history.
Previous ASU winners include two-time winners Aisha Adams and Adree Lakey along with Ashley Painter and Celethia Byrd.
Others honored by the LSC include West Texas A&M's Morgan Shelton as Field Athlete of the Year. THe men honored Nick Jones of Abilene Christina as Field Athlete of the Year and West Texas A&M's Tommy Curry won the Track Athlete of the Year.
