SAN ANGELO – Sweeps are becoming the trend for the Angelo State volleyball team.
Set by set, the No. 9 Belles swept their way to four wins last weekend at the Hilltopper/Rattler Classic. On Tuesday, it was announced that the sweeps had continued as the Lone Star Conference positional Player of the Week awards went to
Shelbi Goode for Offensive Player of the Week,
Alex Woolsey took Setter of the Week and
Shelby Wilt earned Defensive Player of the Week.

Goode, playing for the first time as a Belle last weekend after transferring from Alabama, dominated the tournament and was named its Most Valuable Player. The junior, who is now playing at the outside hitter position, finished with 56 kills – including 13 kills in the season opener against Southeastern Oklahoma and a season-high 19 kills against St. Edward's.
“She was extremely terminal for us and put away a ton of balls,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “She handled a lot of out-of-system balls and was a go-to player for us. She came in with a a lot of experience so I never had any doubt that she would fit in volleyball wise. I really like the fact that it seems like it is her third year here. She fits in great with our team personality wise and is really coachable. She is giving us everything that she can.”
Woolsey, a senior captain, began the season by adding 158 assists to her career total. That takes her to 3,849 on her career – a mark that is only 937 away from becoming ASU's all-time leader in assists. Woolsey was a five-time Setter of the Week winner last season.
“Alex made great choices and gave the right people the ball at the right time,” Waddington said. “That's what great setters have to do. St. Ed's tested her defensively and she was up for the challenge. She did a great job and her hard work is really showing on the court.”
Wilt, a sophomore libero from Dalhart, continued her strong defensive play that she exhibited as a freshman last season. Wilt played in every match as a freshman and led the Belles with 585 digs and has already accumulated 65 through the first four matches of this season.
“Shelby was everywhere. She played hard and continued to make plays just like she did for us all last season,” Waddington said. “Her play keeps our team in play and makes the players around her better.”
The LSC names two players per positional award each week. Along with the ASU players earning awards, Texas A&M-Commerce's Rachel Robertson was named an Offensive POY, ENMU's Hayley Couch a Defensive Player of the Week and WT's Jordan Neal a Setter of the Week.
The Belles return to action at noon on Friday in Denver, Colo. against No. 11 Cal-State Bernadino before playing Regis at 3:30 p.m. ASU opens its home schedule at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 against Cameron at the Junell Center and will host Midwestern State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.
