DENVER, Colo. – The No. 9 Angelo State volleyball team dropped its first match of the season in a five-set (27-25, 18-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-11) clash against Regis University on Friday in its second contest of the Colorado Premiere Challenge at the Regis Fieldhouse.
The Belles (5-1) were coming off a sweep of No. 11 Cal-State San Bernadino earlier in the day. Angelo State will play No. 21 Colorado School of Mines at noon on Saturday at the Regis Fieldhouse in the Belles' second match of the season against a top-25 team. CSM (4-2) comes into the match having dropped both of its matches on Friday – first a 3-1 loss to Abilene Christian and then a 3-0 defeat to No. 3 Tampa. The Orediggers are 1-1 this season against Lone Star Conference teams after opening their year with a 3-0 win over Incarnate Word before falling to the Wildcats.
“They played very well and served tough,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “We didn't handle the ball the way we needed to play against them. They are a young team that played hard and we didn't respond to that. That's pretty disappointing.”

Alex Woolsey led ASU with 56 assists and 16 digs, while
Shelbi Goode had a season-high 20 kills in the loss. Woolsey's 56 assists were also a season high and only four away from her career best against West Texas A&M last season in Canyon. Freshman

Shelby Wilt another 14, while
Maddie Huth contributed 11 kills and
Katie Coleman nine.
The Belles outblocked the Rangers 14-10 with Huth leading the way with seven block assists and one solo effort. Regis improved to 3-3 on the season with the win before taking on CS-San Bernadino in its final pool play match.
ASU had won its first 15 sets before Regis took the opening set of the Belles' sixth match of the season.
“We have to shake it off and put it behind us,” Waddington said. “We are going to play two strong teams again tomorrow. You have to have a short memory in volleyball and we'll have to do that.”
The Belles fall to 1-4 all-time against Regis University.
