SAN ANGELO – Maggi Jo Keffury had 57 assists and
Shelby Wilt added 32 digs to help lead the No. 16-ranked Angelo State volleyball team to a 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-10) Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday at the Junell Center.
The Belles (14-6, 6-3 LSC) trailed the match 2-0 after the first two sets, but battled back to improve to 9-1 at home this season. It is the first time ASU has come back from being down 2-0 since beating Emporia State 17-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-10 on Sept. 30, 2011.
"We just had a lot of errors in the first two sets and that was the difference," Keffury said. "We played cleaner (in the final three sets). We were in the locker room at halftime and said 'we're going to go and win three straight sets right now'. That's what we did. We still could have played cleaner, but we got the job done and that's what needed to happen."
Angelo State dropped the first two sets after committing 14 errors in the first set and eight in the second. The Belles, who evened the season-series with the Lions with the win, used a strong defense to stay in the sets despite a low hitting percentage. The Belles were faced with match point and were in danger of being swept in the third set with the Lions leading 25-24. ASU rallied though and ran off three straight points with kills from
Katie MacLeay, an ace from Keffury and a kill from
Arielle Bond to send the match to a fourth set.
The fourth set was another grueling test, but ASU broke a 19-all set with a 5-2 run before an ace from Huth ended the set. ASU closed out the match in the fifth on a 10-5 run after A&M-Commerce fought back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the set at six. ASU took advantage of two late errors by the Lions to take a 14-9 lead before
Cerbi Ritchey answered a Taryn Driver kill with one of her own to end the match.
"The crazy thing is that we were playing really high error in the first two sets and still almost won both of them," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "You're not going to win many matches when you are committing errors like we were, but we cut our errors in half the last three sets to win. We played a little smarter and gave them opportunities to make mistakes. Our ball control improved drastically and that really helped us come back."
Maddie Huth led the Belles with 18 kills and a .256 hitting percentage. Huth is now only 11 kills away from 1,000 in her career after the performance.
Kaelen Valdez added 26 digs in the match and also supplied four kills.
"A lot of credit has to go to our seniors who really stepped up," Waddington said. "Kaelen was making great passes and Maddie was super terminal."
Bond finished the match with 13 kills, while Ritchey had 12 for the Belles.
Katie MacLeay and
Haley Bianco were both in double-digits in digs with 19 and 14, respectively, while
Courtney Bartusiak had six kills and six digs. Wilt passed Shelby Pitcock (2001-04) for second on the ASU all-time digs list and has 1,577 digs in her career. She is now only 26 digs away from matching Jennifer Glass's all-time record of 1,603 digs which was established in 1996. Keffury, who established a career-high with her 57 assists, also added 14 digs and four aces for the Belles.
Ciara Holmes led A&M-Commerce with 13 kills, while Jordan Neal had 45 assists and 21 digs. The Lions fall to 14-5 overall and even their conference record at 4-4 with the loss.
"It's almost like we forgot how to win," Waddington said. "I told them between the sets that we had to relearn how to win and take care of this match. We went out there and did it."
Angelo State returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Texas Woman's. The Pioneers are coming off a five-set win over Tarleton State in Stephenville. TWU took the first meeting against ASU on Oct. 8 in Denton.
